Dear Student,
The Facilities Committee is charged with considering campus buildings, including planning for the New Building at 65 Fifth Avenue, planning a possible student center and new library, and rearranging all space on campus. The committee is made up of about 20 faculty and staff plus about 3-4 students. It is co-chaired by Provost Tim Marshall and Executive VIce President Jim Murtha and consults with VP for Facilities, Lia Gartner.
This committee is both architectural and political in nature.
The following qualifications would be useful in applying for a spot on the Facilities Committee:
A. ARCHITECTURE AND ENGINEERING. The Committee will be working closely and directly with architects, engineers, and consultants who are designing new buildings, so at least some of the student delegation should have technical knowledge of architecture and engineering.
B. STRONG NEGOTIATING SKILLS. The commitee contains many of the most high-powered administrators in the university and considers controversial topics of space allocation, and the students are outnumbered, so at least some of the student delegation should be able to stand up firmly for student space and rights.
C. ACADEMIC PLANNING. Because the committee will be rearranging and defining old and new facilities for academic programs, labs, studios, and research, at least some of the student delegation should have familiarity with academic planning, curriculum, and library planning.
D. KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNIVERSITY. Because the committee will be dealing with all departments of The New School, the student delegation should as a whole have experience of the university’s departments.
E. TIME COMMITMENT. This committee is expected to meet frequently and require hard work. Please apply only if you wish to make a serious commitment for the entire school year including attending early-morning meetings.
If you are interested in applying for a position on the Facilities Committee, please fill in the online form below with particular regard to the above qualifications. Applications are welcome equally from USS members, future USS members and nonmembers. Applicants will be evaluated by a non-applicant reviewer, solely with regard to ensuring the best student representation. Applicants must be current students in good standing. Thank you for applying!
