It’s been a crazy semester. As we wind down and get ready to take a breather over winter break, we wanted to let you know about some of the things the USS has been up to, as well as what we’re planning for next semester, and your opinions about what you think we should be doing.
Show Me The Money
This semester we’ve funded 20 proposals totaling approximately $55,000 from a wide range of student organizations and individual students, including New Light Opera, the Social Justice Leadership Retreat, and the first ever Battle of the Bands (and many others!). (more…)
The student occupation of the 90 5th Ave. Student Study Center at The New School came to an end over the holiday weekend. As we reflect on the events of the past two weeks, it is clear there are many unresolved issues which the occupation brought to light that need the full attention of the university community. One of these issues involves autonomous student space on campus. Another involves issues of privilege and power, and the lack of critical attention to questions of marginalization and exclusion. As a student at Monday’s public forum in Kellen Gallery (more…)
As many are aware, the last week has seen a flurry of developments related to the student occupation at 90 5th Ave. and Kellen Gallery (2 W. 13th) at The New School. While we fully support our fellow students’ right to political protest and dissent, we do not support the actions of defacement in Kellen Gallery, nor the hate speech and extreme violence which have manifested in writing on the walls in both spaces. However, we believe that these actions do not represent the majority of students at The New School, nor even the majority of people involved with (more…)

An Open Letter to the New School Community,
On Wednesday, September 21st 2011, the state of Georgia knowingly murdered Troy Davis, a black man whose involvement was not proven beyond a reasonable doubt in the death of a white police officer in August of 1989. The events surrounding the night in question are sketchy at best, no DNA evidence exists to implicate Davis, and 7 of the 9 original witnesses who testified (more…)

That’s right folks, another school year is here, and with that comes lots of exciting new student events that need support and funding to be a success. That’s where we come in. The USS funds student events and activities every semester, and we will be accepting student funding requests again very soon. So if your group is interested in getting funded, all you have to do is download our funding request form for all the details. If you have more questions, check out our funding request page, or just ask us, we’re happy to help answer them.
That’s rights folks, the USS needs a logo, and we need your help. And to sweeten the offer, we’re willing to pay one lucky student $250 for their amazing original design! See your logo on tote bags, water bottles and temporary tattoos (or whatever) everywhere and feel great. All the time. Forever. (Kind of.) Check out the design poster here. The contest is open to all New School students–you don’t have to be a design student to enter. We are accepting submissions until September 30th. (more…)
