2011-12 Election Winners :: Lang

The following candidates were elected to serve on the USS for the 2011-12 year for Lang.

Attend this institution for its progressive ideals and personalized curriculum. Arrive and do little but identify elements of the bureaucracy and yet continue to function within it. Sit through two, three, four credit hours on philosophy. Education reform. Political identity. Culture. Begin to develop righteousness for the cause. Do little. Do nothing. Consider; the glaring contradiction. Become unclear about what it is you actually feel anything discernible or organized about. Choose to change. Choose to incite change. The NS University Student Senate has experienced varying levels of legitimacy, and it’s long past time to question “Why?” The opportunity to be an intermediary between the students of Lang and the NS administration is the kind of offer that isn’t always available elsewhere, and the inherent meaning of that encourages everything this college strives to instill in us. Vote, or perpetuate the lack of voice that has been such a bitter point of contention.

Michael Kaplan

LANG Michael Kaplan
This is my first year at Lang, however, I am already realizing a major problem: there is so little community involvement! I would like to get involved with university activities and help facilitate the progressive, educated, and exciting environment that the New School is known for. As a member of the USS, I would like to develop new ways to garner and support student involvement in university life.

I have experience in organizing and leadership, as well as working within consensus-based structures. I have been involved in political causes and community service since 7th grade. Throughout my high school years, much of my time was spent organizing volunteer-projects as well as working with political organizations. Last year, I dedicated a gap-year to traveling to the Middle East in order to volunteer, learn about the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, and teach English in a Palestinian refugee camp. I have always been dedicated and passionate about all of my endeavors.

I believe that I would be a positive asset to the LSU and USS. I am a very dedicated student; organized, balanced, motivated, and ready to help make this world, as well as this school, a better place.

Santiago Posas

LANG Santiago Posas
My name is Santiago Posas, and I am a rising senior and history major at Lang. I was born in this country, but grew up in Guayaquil, Ecuador. In my time here, I have seen what I feel is a fundamental disconnect between our administration and student body. Many administrative processes that affect students have no student input whatsoever, or involve students only marginally. Even successful, thriving student activities and clubs have serious issues obtaining funding and support from the administration. I want to ensure that students have access to the resources necessary for success, and that students are sufficiently protected by the university’s policies. If elected to the Student Senate, aside from fighting along with the Senate for more student space and a standalone library, and helping to manage our funds and support students from Lang and the broader university who are doing cool things, I intend to work to bring systemic power to the student body; not simply as a grant, but as a right.
