1. Philosophy Conference Proposal

Jacob came to present a funding proposal for the Philosophy department’s 10th Annual Graduate Student conference. Their conferences generally include people from multiple departments. This year, two of their speakers are from The New School and one is a professor from Chicago. They usually receive funds from the Dean’s office and the department, but was unable to be funded by the Dean’s office due to another conference’s proposal receiving funding.

They already have submissions from across the country. They are asking for $1,200, which is half of their conference fund.

USS voted to fund the Philosophy conference for $1,200. The proposal passed as follows.

YES: (7) Bae, Crews, Elias, Housle, Hurley, Loureiro, Park
NO: (0)
ABSTAIN: (0)

2. Mannes Light Proposal

Sean reported that he spoke with Ally from Mannes Light on specifics for their proposal, and worked on setting a focused goal for the group. They seem to be more about educational-based experience, and performance as a display of where they’re at instead of staging a full-scale production.

Sean and Ally worked out the proposal as follows:
Royalties: $2,500
Master Classes: $700
Pianist fees: $500
Director: $300
Costume/Set/Light: $1,000

    Publicity: $500

Total: $5,500

They were given $300 from OSDA, and also reduced the request from their initial $8,000

Kim raised a concern that the problem with the costume/set/light line is that they’re a brand new group and haven’t proven what they can do; also many established groups don’t receive that much. Anna-Karin stated that she would feel more comfortable giving money for royalties after they select the pieces. Sean said that the group has been in contact with three instructors regarding master classes.

The senate motioned to vote on $5,500 for Mannes Light. The vote passed as follows.

YES: (8) Bae, Crews, Eddy, Elias, Housle, Hurley, Loureiro, Park
NO: (0)

3. Anthropology Conference Proposal

Randi, a NSSR Anthropology student, submitted the proposal for a conference they plan to have. This is their 4th conference, put on by 2nd year MA students, assisted by a faculty advisor. She stated that they have had over 100 people apply, spread among NSSR, Columbia, and CUNY. They usually have 3 panels with 3 faculty members per panel, having an open conversation. The event is moderated by students.

She stated that they are trying to move outside NSSR this year. They have invited a Parsons professor to be creative with how they use the university at large. They have a proposed list of panelists, which are almost guaranteed.

They have already received $200 from their student association. The senate motioned to fund the Anthropology Conference $1,650. The vote passed as follows.

YES: (8) Bae, Crews, Eddy, Elias, Housle, Hurley, Loureiro, Park
NO: (0)

4. Meeting Minutes Approval

Chris motioned to approve meeting minutes dating back to September. The vote passed as follows.

YES: (8) Bae, Crews, Eddy, Elias, Housle, Hurley, Loureiro, Park
NO: (0)

5. iCAP Volunteers

Sean reminded us that Friday is the deadline for the creative team. Minju mentioned that a call for papers would be cool.

Sean reported that there are no dates available at all for the performance, and we will have to move it off-campus. The auditions have been relocated to Wollman Hall.

6. Critical Themes Proposal

Michelle and Rory came to request funds for the Critical Themes presentation in the Media Studies department. Rory stated that this is generally the first chance for students to present their academic work. Last year they had 30 presenters mostly from the New School. This year they reached out early and have submissions from California and the Netherlands. They are trying to get a more high-profile keynote speaker for this year.

Michelle noted that they are interested in cultivating the international interest, hence the request for funding presenters’ travel costs.

A debate followed regarding the precedence it could set to fund travel for non-New School students.

The senate motioned to fund $4,000 for Critical Themes with the exception that the funds cannot be used to fund travel for students from outside universities. The vote passed as follows.

YES: (9) Bae, Cline, Crews, Eddy, Elias, Holmes, Housle, Hurley, Loureiro
NO: (0)

7. Adjourn

The meeting was adjourned at 10:00pm by unanimous vote.

Respectfully Submitted,
Kim Hurley
