1. Ted Byfield’s report
Ted spoke to the Senate on his report regarding issues with SafeConnect, which Academic Technology has begun to use for access to the wireless network. He went into detail on his investigation into the program and the concerns he has about it. His suggestion for USS is to consult with the Faculty Senate on this issue.
2. Elections
Kim reports that elections for new senators must get started immediately. Corey suggested publicizing the elections to get more interest. Anna-Karin will design the election posters by September 15. Kim and Melissa will work with Tom McDonald on setting up the elections.
3. USS Printing
Anna-Karin reports that a printing account for USS has been set up.
4. Credit/debit card
Melissa states that Tushar Gogia has given her information from last year’s discussion on the issue. Anna-Karin and Nicole will meet with Karen Connor-Wilson to determine the logistics of having a card. Nicole will write the proposal.
5. GPIA/Milano Volunteer Day
Melissa introduced a proposal from GPIA/Milano Volunteer Day for funding their project. The event is asking for $1,000 for t-shirts, funding for materials, and lunch for the volunteers.
The proposal passed 10-0.
6. Lighting equipment proposal
Corey introduced a proposal to purchase lighting equipment for use at USS events on campus. He has proposed a budget of approximately $2,000 for lights and related equipment.
Anna-Karin said that she would need to see much more. She also wants to read student suggestions for insight on what students want before spending this amount of money. She stated that she is definitely open to this, though.
Hajir proposed further research on the equipment to see if it can be found cheaper or if we can get a discount. Chris suggested creating a comparison of different lights for more information.
Kim suggested that before voting on this, there should be a line-item budget of what exactly would be bought.
Melissa asked where the equipment would be stored. Corey responded that this was a complaint the administration had raised. He has been told by Shannon Logan to decide what equipment would be purchased, and then work with her to determine where it would be stored.
Cordelia and Kim will work with Corey on shopping for lights.
7. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00pm by unanimous vote.
Respectfully submitted,
Kim Hurley
Secretary of the Senate
