Why did the Arab Spring Happen and how can it be linked to OWS?
Benoit Challand (NSSR Politics)
Where: Room 602 (66 West 12th)
When: 11am -Noon

The string of revolts in the Arab world consists in bottom-up calls for profound political changes. More social justice, less greed from the autocratic rulers, and enfranchisement of the local youths have been key motives of the protests throughout the region. Protests in Greece, Spain and London share a lot of the same structural problems, and this short teach-in want to go through these themes. What are the historical roots to the ongoing revolts? What can the Arab revolts teach us to confront an increasingly violent authority?

Social Justice and Occupy Wall Street
Andy Slater (Milano)
Where: Lang Cafe (65 W 11th)
When: 10am-Noon

How do social justice organizers relate to OWS? Is OWS an anti-racist movement? How do people of color and working people fit into the discourse of the 99%. An open discussion of the relationship between social justice and the OWS movement.

In Defense of Wall Street: How the “99%” are Destroying this Country.
Robert Moeller
Where: Room 410 (66 West 12th)
When: 11:00 am – 12:00pm

A former Investment Banker provides a crash course in Wall Street 101, while leading a discussion on the shared responsibility for the current economic situation.

Sam Sedar (Majority Report); Josh Harkinson (Mother Jones); Priscilla Grimm (editorial board of Occupied Wall Street Journal); Miles Kohrman & Dimitri Gurvits of the New School Free Press. Heather Chaplin (moderator)
Where: Room 407 (66 West 12th)
When: 11-1pm

Chaplin and her students give a brief over-view of the long history of journalist as activist, and the transition of journalism to an “objective” practice during the late 20th century. Chaplin’s journalism students, Kohrman & Dimitri will then discuss what the role of student journalism is, an how they’ve approached coverage of OWS as young reporters.

A Demand-less Movement? From the Spanish 15-M to OWS, Direct Action and the Politics of the Commons
Luis Moreno-Caballud (U-Penn); Marco Deseriis (Eugene Lang College – The New School)
Where: Room 410 (66 West 12th)
When: 12:00-2:00pm

The Spanish May 15th movement, also called the “indignados” movement, shares with the Arab Spring and with the current “Occupy Wall Street” movement some major characteristics, such as its horizontal organization and its inclusive composition. Originally spreading through the setting of “tent cities” in public spaces, it transformed itself into a diverse, plural, and somewhat unpredictable magma of neighborhood assemblies, periodic mobilizations, networks of collective discussion, and direct actions such a anti-eviction blockades and the resistance to police raids on undocumented migrants. This new stage of the movement has still been able to sustain and increase a fundamental rupture in the Spanish public sphere. The comparison with other movements, and particularly with the one currently developing in the US can be very revealing because of the common problems faced by them, such as the controversial issue of the “need for demands.” After presenting videos and other documents from the M-15 Movement, the facilitators will engage the students in a conversation on the relationship between tactics and strategy, temporary alliances and the long-term goals of the movement. A special section of the discussion will be dedicated to how the notion of the commons may be useful as a basis to articulate such long-term view.

The Flying Seminar
The Transregional Center for Democratic Studies TCDS at The New School and Deliberately Considered are excited to announce the first meeting of the Flying Seminar: Framing Critical Moments with Jeffrey Goldfarb & Elzbieta Matynia
Where: Room  404 (66 West 12th)
When:  3pm -6pm

The Flying Seminar is a series of portable conversations with key participants (or experts) in various movements and actions in the United States and beyond, which could help to crystallize the differences and parallels between projects of resistance then and now.  We have in mind the Civil Rights movement , SDS, the 1968 movements in Europe, the second wave Feminist movement in the States, the Solidarity movement in Poland, The Anti-apartheid Movement in South Africa (its peaceful and its militant side), the Green Revolution in Iran, and the Arab Spring.  The goal would be to facilitate discussion about movements past, from here and elsewhere, as a way of guiding the future of movements present. The hope is that this discussion could help address the key question of what is to be done now.

For ongoing discussion of issues related to the Flying Seminar see www.deliberatelyconsidered.com.
